Comiso (Ragusa), Sicily, September 1940. Another machine of 96 Gruppo, whose 236 Squadriglia diving duck emblem can be seen on its wheel spats. The use of Stukas by the Regia Aeronautica gave rise to the false rumour that these aircraft were being produced under licence in Italy by Breda as Ba.201. Within the Regia Aeronautica itself, the Ju 87 was nicknamed Picchiatello (with plural Picchiatelli), meaning 'mad' or 'barmy' (which says a lot for its pilots' character!), making good use of the happy coincidence of this epithet with the aeronautical term picchiatta, used to describe a dive in Italian. (Camouflage: RLM70 Schwarzgrun / RLM71 Dunkelgrun upper surfaces with RLM65 Hellblau undersides).
