This example was one of those fitted with the RAF.3a water-cooled V-12 engine and was delivered to No.18 Squadron, RFC, in June 1917. Although DH.4/9s were kept above 15,000 ft (4572 m) to avoid local ground fire, No.18 Squadron did low-level attacks on the advancing enemy troops in March 1918.
