This aircraft belonged to the South African Air Force and was based in Mombasa, Kenya in July 1941 for operations against the Italians in Ethiopia. During a raid it ran low on fuel and was forced to land in Vichy French controlled Djibouti where the aircraft and crew were interned. The crew were eventually sent back to South Africa but the Ju.86 was retained and flown by the Vichy French until the Vichy collapse in 1943. When the Free French took over Djibouti the aircraft was returned to South Africa where it was little used and eventually scrapped in August 1945.
