In late 1930s 17 (18 ?) Ju.86Z were purchased by South African Airways. At the outbreak of World War 2 they were impressed into the SAAF for use as maritime patrol bombers. In late 1940 they were replaced by Avro Ansons and they were then sent to East Africa for operations against the Italians. This particular aircraft belonged to No.12 Squadron SAAF. All surviving SAAF Ju.86's were scrapped in August 1945.
